About

Located in the heart of Strasbourg's Manufacture des Tabacs, an iconic 19th-century industrial building formerly dedicated to cigar manufacturing, today it houses an ecosystem focused on youth, the arts, science and innovation.

Since May 2024, Karmen Camina has been operating in the 500m² boiler room and printing works of the former Manufacture.

Who are we?

Karmen Camina is run by the Société Coopérative d’Intérêt Collectif (SCIC) Tiers-Lab.

The co-operative brings together individuals and organisations: employees, volunteers, service users, associations, private individuals and, soon, other private and public partners.

Each member has one vote at general meetings and thus plays an active part in the life of the cooperative. Karmen Camina develops projects in line with its core values and convictions: social and environmental justice, solidarity, sharing, innovation and experimentation.

Programming and Technology

Arts programme and activities

Karmen Camina mainly (co-)produces an eclectic, gender-balanced music programme throughout the year, featuring collectives and artists from all over (France, the EU and non-EU countries).

This programme comprises events taking place during the day, in the evening, at night, during the week and at weekends.

These events feature concerts and DJ sets spanning the genres of alternative acoustic, electronic, dance and experimental music.

Other types of events are regularly organised, including audiovisual creations (films and screenings), performance art, fashion (catwalk shows) and talks.

Technological strengths

The Gallery (main hall) is fitted with a 360° sound system installed in a dome configuration, comprising around thirty Hi-Fi-style speakers manufactured and assembled by the French brand CYM Acoustics.

This installation offers a new, immersive experience and enables the presentation of sound projects played back in spatialised sound. Spatial audio is an audio processing technology that creates an immersive 3D experience, simulating the natural perception of sound in space (height, width, depth). Unlike conventional stereo, it positions sounds at specific locations, allowing the listener to hear elements above, below or behind them.

They can sense the movement of sounds around them, as well as a sense of depth and distance.

The Club (small venue) is equipped with a 100 per cent analogue stereo sound system from the high-end American brand Danley Sound Labs, renowned for its power and precision – a brand that is not widely available in France…

The café/bar area is fitted with vintage Montarbo speakers, from the long-established Italian professional audio equipment brand.
