There's a near-obvious rightness to hearing dub techno inside a former boiler room. The genre was born in the mid-90s in post-reunification Berlin, around the Basic Channel circle, crossing Jamaican soundsystem culture with the most stripped-back techno: slow, physical music built from deep bass and endless reverb. Thirty years on, Special Groove, Karmen Camina's format honouring the artists who shaped the scene in extended sets, brings two of its architects into the walls of the Manufacture des Tabacs.

A Canadian musician and sound artist based in Berlin since 2006, Deadbeat (Scott Monteith) is one of the most prolific producers in contemporary electronic music: twenty-two albums weaving together dub, techno and sound experimentation, released on labels including ~scape, Wagon Repair, Echocord, and his own imprint BLKRTZ, founded in 2011. An unrivalled dub archivist, he describes the great dub techno track as weather magic: a perfect loop where you change the air in the room rather than the structure.
In Strasbourg he reunites with Tikiman (Paul St. Hilaire), a singer and producer born in Grand Bay, on the Caribbean island of Dominica, based in Berlin since 1994. His first recording, in 1996 alongside Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, opened a career that would make him dub techno's defining voice, through the Burial Mix maxis and collaborations with Rhythm & Sound. A quietly legendary figure, thirty years in and almost no interviews, he released Tikiman Vol. 1 in 2023, his first solo album in over a decade.
The two go back a long way: their joint album The Infinity Dub Sessions dates from 2014, their latest collaboration, Rooms of Kairos Sessions, from 2025. Live appearances together remain rare. Tonight the duo precedes a long closing set from Deadbeat alone, running until dawn.

Between poetic experiences and sonic constructions, Diane Moe is a multidisciplinary artist who shares her discoveries through dub, art-rock, mental tribe and minimal textures laced with spoken word. Co-founder of the La Chemin collective, dedicated to underground soundsystem events in the Toulouse countryside, she has also been a resident on Egregore, TRNSTN Radio and Zest Radio.
An illustrator and tattoo artist on the side, she opens the night with a hybrid set, slowed-down vinyl meeting total surrender.

Karmen Camina is a hybrid, collective and living cultural venue, located in the former Manufacture des Tabacs of Strasbourg. A place of encounters, freedom, creation and expression, open to all, with a commitment to ecological and social progress, sound and visual creation, and every form of experimentation that helps build the commons.
Karmen Camina is carried by the Tiers-Lab cooperative, made up of independent entrepreneurs and creatives from Strasbourg's alternative cultural community. Decision-making power is shared between the cooperative's partners. There is no majority shareholder.
